To operate a commercial vehicle for interstate purposes, however, motorists must be at least 21 years of age. If drivers are younger than 21 years of age during the time of application, they will receive a “K” restriction on their driving credential, as this prohibits them from operating a commercial vehicle outside of the state. Before getting a commercial drivers license, however, applicants must first obtain a Class D (passenger vehicle) driving credential and a commercial learner’s permit (CLP). To obtain a CLP, applicants must pass one or more knowledge examinations. After passing the exams, motorists may get a CDL drivers license within 180 days of receiving their CLP, unless they wish to renew their permit for an additional 180 days.
When obtaining a Massachusetts CDL license, other requirements vary depending on the class of the commercial vehicle (ClassA, B, or C) and whether applicants wish to obtain any possible endorsements as well. However, most drivers need to pass a general knowledge exam, a combination endorsement exam and a road test. Applicants may review the state’s Commercial Driver’s License Manual to prepare themselves for these exams. To obtain a commercial drivers license or a CLP, motorists must also provide proof of their legal presence, Social Security Number (SSN) and state residency. They must also complete an application and pay any applicable fees.
