As a new resident, you are required to change your car title address within 30 days of your move, according to state law. Failure to do so may lead to certain minor and major consequences. For example, if the state Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) does not have your up-to-date address on file, you may not receive important correspondences regarding your driving and vehicle records. If the registry discovers that you have not applied for a car title change of address, your driving credential or car registration may also be suspended.
To update the address on your car title in Massachusetts, you will be required to apply for an amended title certificate with the state RMV. You can submit your car title address form either in person through an RMV service center or by mail to the registry’s Title Division in Boston, MA. If you are applying for aaddress change in person, you will also be required to complete the following steps:
Note: If you are also making changes to your lienholder information, you will also be require to supply the lien release letter.
If you cannot change your vehicle title address in person, regardless of the reason, you can submit your request by mail. When applying for a change of address on your car title by mail, you will be required to submit the same items that apply for the in-person procedure, outlined above. However, if you choose to apply for a corrected title by mail, you will have to send your fee payment in the form of a check or money order. These fees differ depending on the change you are making to your car title and how many duplicate copies of the title you request.
After processing your MA title change of address form, the state RMV will manufacture the corrected title and mail it to your new address within two weeks. However, if your title is in the possession of a lienholder, the registry will mail it to the lienholder’s address. Note that, if you have an active car registration, you will also be required to complete a separate procedure to obtain an updated registration card for Massachusetts if you are a new resident to the state.
